RPI dominated the game early and often en route to a 52-7 victory over the hapless Hartwick Hawks.
The Engineers got on the board early, tallying their first touchdown less than five minutes into the game. Dan Stephens punched through the line at 10:11 to give RPI a 7-0 lead.
The Engineers never looked back.The offense continued to roll, with Flynn Cochran catching a 12-yard pass from Dan Cole for RPI’s second touchdown of the game.
The second quarter saw an offensive surge for the Engineers, with RPI scoring four touchdowns to push the score to 42-0 at the half. Cole scrambled for a five-yard score just five seconds into the quarter, and hit Pat Hughes for a five-yard touchdown pass six minutes later. Otis Williams poured into the offense with a five-yard touchdown effort at 5:58, and Jon Branche completed the half with a 16-yard touchdown reception on the next drive.
Hartwick finally found the scoreboard five minutes into the second half, with running back Lindy Crea punching through the Engineer line for a short two-yard score. On the next Engineer possession, Jay Bernardo found the end zone on a 10-yard running effort to put RPI up 49-7.
Matt Verenini capped off the game with a field goal in the fourth quarter. The Engineer defense held strong, and the game ended at 52-7.
The defense from the Engineers was swarming. They caught seven interceptions off the hands of the Hartwick quarterbacks, and caused four fumbles.
The special teams for RPI looked good; the only blemish being a Verenini missed field goal in the second quarter.
With the win, the Engineers maintain their perfect record at 6-0, 2-0 in UCAA play. The victory was Joe King’s 100th at RPI; his record as the Engineers’ head coach is 100-36-2 in 15 seasons.
The Engineers continue their road swing next week against the Cardinals of St. John Fisher on Saturday at 1 pm.
