Chicago Comedy joins Sheer Idiocy

Three! Two! One! The Chicago Comedy Company has its audiences start a scene or game with a countdown, in the spirit of its style of lots of audience participation. As part of Family Weekend’s schedule of activities, the CCC provided an improvisational comedy show in the McNeil Room of the Union, Saturday at 9 pm for an audience of over 100 students and their families.

Opening for the CCC was Sheer Idiocy, the on-campus student improv troupe. Their first skit was a game called Slideshow. In this game, two Idiots leave the room while the audience suggests a place, a famous person, and six interesting things for a vacation that another Idiot went on. The two absent Idiots return and improvise the slides of the six interesting things of the vacation, while the Idiot that went on the vacation explains each slide. The result was very funny and Sheer Idiocy would do well to use this game again.

Sheer Idiocy also played Sit Stand Kneel, a game where there must be one of three Idiots in each of the three positions at all times. The Idiots closed their opening act with Subtitles, in which a scene in a made-up language is translated by two Idiots on the side of the stage.

The three members of the Chicago Comedy Company present for the show, Andrew, Kathleen, and Celeste, entered complimenting their RPI counterparts. The CCC started things off with a game called Dr. Know-It-All. For this game, a member of the audience was called up to join two CCC performers as one of the three people that make up Dr. Know-It-All. Each of the three people playing Dr. Know-It-All were only allowed to say one word at a time, resulting in some hilarious answers.

The best game in the CCC’s show was Shoulda Said. For this game, Andrew stood off to the side while Kathleen and Celeste improvised a scene. Every few lines, Andrew would clap his hands and yell “Shoulda said!” requiring the speaker to change what they had just said and thus the direction of the scene. The random element this added made the game one of the CCC’s funniest.

Not all the games were winners, and in fact Oscar Winning Moment fell flat on its face. This game had two CCC performers improvising a scene, periodically the third would say “Oscar winning moment!” and one of the two performers in the scene would launch into an Oscar winning monologue.

The only reason this game wasn’t completely unfunny was the contrast between the melodrama and the gross factor of the audience suggestion, taxidermy.

At the conclusion of the show, Sheer Idiocy returned and joined the CCC for one last game, which found two improv performers in a scene while the rest stood along the back of the stage; periodically one would step up and replace one of the two up front, changing the scene.

The unqualified success of the final game shows why the CCC was, in general, not as successful: they only had three comedians.

With the five members of Sheer Idiocy on stage as well, the comedic energy truly began to flow as the performers were swept away by it, and that is when lines such as “‘How long do we have to stand here like this?’ ‘Until the bicycles appear underneath us!’” were born.

Overall, Sheer Idiocy and the Chicago Comedy Company put together an enjoyable, if not stellar, evening of improv.
