Budget system in test mode online

Suzanne Peluso
President of the Union

I hope everyone had a great weekend and took part in some of the events held during Family Weekend. It was nice to see so many parents excited to see what the campus has to offer us. Communiversity’s Fall Fest was a great time, bringing together RPI students, families, and community members to the RPI campus where plenty of entertainment was provided.

The Union Executive Board has been off to a great start. E-Board members have begun to meet with their clubs and are showing support as club representatives. The committees have some great ideas in budgeting and marketing, as well as the physical facility of the Union.

The Technology Committee has worked with the Union’s system administrators in developing an online budgeting system. This initiative is being incorporated into the club management system, where clubs may access their budgets online. Budgets will be calculated through this medium, doing away with the paper and hand held calculators! This will not only help the clubs, but the E-Board representatives as well. It will cut down on a lot of time during our budgeting sessions, and everything will be much clearer to identify. The beginning stages are complete, and a few clubs have volunteered to test the system. Within the month, we should have everything ready to work with. We are very thankful to the system administrators, Dave Parker, Lee Emmert, and Josh West in creating this system and having it completed to use this year.

The Rensselaer Union Business Operations Committee will be performing a survey to gain an understanding of what students want to see. We have been evaluating business operations in the Union and would like to know your opinions. Take some time the next few days and think about what you really like about the Union, while thinking of things you feel need improvement. The Union promotes many activities, but the building itself supports several business operations students utilize. These include the bookstore, food services, the games room, etc. The best way to approach new projects is to first get feedback from students and soon we will be reaching out and gathering this input.

The McNeil Room will host a few events this weekend, including Sheer Idiocy on Friday and the Black Student Alliance fall party on Saturday. If you’re looking to support the athletic teams, there will be a swim meet, men’s soccer game, and women’s hockey game all on Saturday. With Halloween just a few days away, I suggest you start carving those pumpkins out and think of some good costume ideas to enjoy this weekend’s festivities!
