The hockey team has added a black patch onto the left shoulder of their jerseys, with the initials ‘TC’ stitched onto it, as a tribute to Tom Cavosie. Tom, father of former RPI hockey players Eric and Marc Cavosie, died tragically this July in a boating accident in Canada.

Both Eric and Marc shared their father’s love of hockey, and both showed that love on the ice of the Houston Field House.

While his sons played at the Albany Academy for Boys and RPI, Tom served as the equipment manager for the men’s hockey team and the skate sharpener for both the men’s and women’s programs.

Eric played in 126 games for the Engineers, tallying three goals and 24 assists. Marc finished his RPI career with 48 goals and 61 assists in 97 games.

Marc played the majority of last season with the Houson Aeros of the AHL. When he helped the Aeros win their first Calder Cup in a dramatic game seven, Tom was there to see it.

“Tom was 180 degrees from the horror stories you hear about sports-involved parents who put pressure on their kids. He just wanted to provide them with the opportunity to succeed by being supportive and making sure they enjoy the game,” said Assistant Coach Ivan Moore.

After their 2002-2003 season, the women’s hockey team honored Tom by giving him the Willie Stanton Award for going above and beyond in his office of commitment to the Rensselaer women’s ice hockey program.
