It appeared to be a battle between kickers, with the Patriots’ Adam Vinatieri and the Jets’ Doug Brien facing off until early in the third quarter.

The Patriots finally took control with a quarterback scramble from Tom Brady and an interception return for a touchdown by the fourth round draft pick, cornerback Asante Samuel.

Curtis Martin was held in check for the third straight game, only rushing for 53 yards on 21 carries.

The Patriots lost more players to injury as Ted Washington and David Patten were both hurt and did not return. Brady and Ty Law were both hurt but returned to the game.
