Engineers win three straight

In a largely successful weekend, capped off by a battle with the elements on Sunday, the Rensselaer women’s tennis team improved to 5-2 on the season.

On the road at Oneonta against Hartwick, the team eeked out a 5-4 win. Lydia Lindhult, Danielle Kocher, and Maggie LaManque earned relatively easy victories in singles, while Florine Cannelle pulled out her singles match in two tiebreakers. The team of LaManque and Lindhult and the team of Cannelle and Anne Marinaro also won at doubles to hand RPI its third victory of the season.

The team traveled again on Saturday to face Clarkson in Potsdam. There, the RPI women brought the Golden Knights to a stunning 8-1 defeat. They achieved this despite a loss to Clarkson’s no. 1 singles player, Emily Emerick, a freshman. Emerick, a resident of Loudonville, moved to 4-0 on the season with her win over RPI’s Annie Erdekian, 7-5, 3-6, 4-6.

Sunday afternoon featured the RPI team’s first match of the season on the Sharp Tennis Courts. Though the skies were dark, and the match was interrupted several times by short rain events, RPI was able to dig out a 6-1 victory over SUNY Brockport (0-2). The match was cut short due to the inclement weather.

Annie Erdekian again had a tough time at first singles, with the match taking a turn for the worse after a double fault at 2-2 in the first set. Julie Adelman continued on to take the match for Brockport, 6-2, 6-2.

Raimi Ishikawa helped push RPI to victory with her win over Nancy Matusiak at second singles, 6-0, 7-6 (7-3). She capped off an easy first set with a crosscourt backhand winner, but faced a stiff challenge in the second set. After a short rain delay, Matusiak crept back into the match, forcing the set to a tiebreak before Ishikawa was able to take the win for RPI.

Cannelle and Marinaro also contributed with a win at third doubles. They won their match 8-5, after SUNY sent a loose forehand into the net.

The RPI women’s tennis team will play at Russell Sage tomorrow at 3 pm. Their next home match will be Sunday, September 21, at 2 pm against Stevens Institute of Technology.
