The Rensselaer Red Hawks women’s soccer team kicked off their 2003 campaign with a dominating 3-0 shutout victory over the Russell Sage Gators.
The first 15 minutes of the game saw the Red Hawks adjusting to a new system of play. Red Hawk Coach Leslie Khachadourian commented that, “the team took a little while to find our feet. This was anticipated by the players and myself with the combination of it being our first game of the season, being on our home turf under the lights, and trying out our new system of play.”
For the rest of the first half the Red Hawks started to gain control of the play and pushed the ball deep into Gator territory. With about 15 minutes left in the half, Anne Drames got control of the ball inside the Russell Sage 18-yard box and took a shot from 15 yards out that hit the crossbar.
RPI kept the pressure up but Gator goalie Katherine Tracy was able to keep the ball out of the net and the first half ended with no score.
In the second half, the Red Hawks continued to keep the ball deep in Gator territory. With about 35 minutes left in the game, captain Katie Fredlund hit a corner kick that skidded through the goal mouth and was just cleared away by the Sage defense.
Two minutes later, however, RPI finally found the back of the net. Lizzie Vitaliano got the ball on the left side of the field and put a shot on Tracy that she couldn’t hold and Adele Godfrey-Certner headed home the rebound.
Fifteen minutes later the Red Hawks got their second goal when after a scurry in front of the Gator goal, the Sage defense weakly cleared a ball that Kerstin Kraft got a hold of and passed to Danielle Schlegel, who chipped the ball over Tracy’s head from about 25 yards out.
RPI finished the scoring with 58 seconds remaining when on their eighth corner kick of the game, Fredlund shot a nice cross to Drames, who put in with her shoulder.
The Red Hawks out shot the Gators 30-2. Red Hawk goalkeeper Regina Primm had one save and Tracy finished with 10 saves.
RPI plays next Friday and Saturday at the Plattsburgh State Tournament. Friday the women take on Mount Holyoke at 2 pm, and Saturday they will play at either noon or 2 pm.
