Campus projects must not hinder students’ mobility

Posted 08-25-2003 at 5:05PM

As you walk through the campus this summer you will find it filled with orange cones and closed off sections, making it more than difficult to get from one place to another. The summer is progressing quickly and the time for students to start filing into the residence halls is fast approaching. There is a lot of progress being made on these projects. Still, we are left asking ourselves, “Will the school be ready for us?”

There is the infamous Biotech Center which is impressive to see actually standing and progressing through its different stages, but it does seem to be behind schedule and puts a big crimp in accessing different sections of campus. There is the work being done on Freshmen Hill that is encompassing three residence halls and the Commons. This work will surely make incoming students feel welcome at Student Orientation when they have to walk in between two large construction sites to get to the big party under the tent.

Then there is the question of College Ave., which has been shut down with the construction of the Biotech Center. Students have to traipse around campus to get to a location that would ordinarily require a short walk. This is not even mentioning the ability to drive up the road.

While the campus is in much disarray this summer, the hope is that the construction will be finished in time to allow students to have a fairly smooth transition onto campus. Some projects will continue into the semester, but there are some that need to be completed as soon as possible, and the convenience of the students should be taken into mind.
