Johnson sets school record as RPI takes second, third

This Saturday, the RPI track and field team competed in the Silfen Invitational held at Connecticut College. Of the 13 teams competing in the meet, the Rensselaer men and women placed well, with numerous scoring athletes.

For the men’s team, who placed second with 145.16 points to Tufts’ 195 points, the highlight events took place on the field. Mike Johnson, with an NCAA automatic qualifying mark, set a new school record in the hammer throw with a distance of 187’ 4”. In addition, Johnson was Rensselaer’s lead scorer in the shot put, placing third with a distance of 42’ 8.75”. Teammate Jim Motzkin, who placed second in the javelin with a throw of 189’ 11”, provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship Meet. In the remaining field events, Rensselaer’s top scorers included Josh Bokel in fourth place for the discus with 134’ 5”, Jason Langley placing third in the pole vault with 14’ even, and Sharath Alampur who won the triple jump with a mark of 44’ 8.25”.

The track athletes were led by Joe Otto, who won the 800m in 1:55.19. Two of the athletes scoring in multiple events were Paul Salasznyk, who placed second in the 400m hurdles with 55.62 and fourth in the 100m dash with 11.65, and Max Zujewski who scored fourth in the 200m dash with 23.50 and eighth in the 400m with 51.71. The other scoring athletes included Matt Trexler, placing fourth in the 110m hurdles with 15.75, Keith Weiss placing second in the 3000m steeplechase with 10:00.02, and the 1600m relay consisting of Adam Day, Otto, Mike Winnick, and Mark Jensenius who placed fourth with the time of 3:28.95.

Switching to the women’s team, RPI placed third in the meet with 92 points and an equal number of strong performances. In the field events, Allison Benson led the team, winning the pole vault with 11’ 4.35”and placing fourth in the triple jump with 32’ 9.5”. Teammate Jo Alexander also scored in both the shot put, with 38’ 1.25” (fourth place), and the discus throw with 108’ 7” (eighth place). Cara Rosato was yet another athlete scoring in multiple events, placing fourth in the pole vault 9’6.25” and fifth in both the long jump and high jump with respective marks of 15’ 1.5” and 4’ 10”. Also in the pole vault, Corey Atwell placed sixth with a jump of 8’6”. Finally, Heather Maffei scored sixth place in the javelin throw with 91’ 9”.

In the track events, Becky Lock set a new school record in the 400m hurdles with a time of 66.52 (second place) and scored fourth in the 100m hurdles with 16.99. Leading the other scoring athletes was team captain Rebecca Rosenberg-Beran, who won the 5000m run in 19:03.14, and Alyssa Coffey, scoring second in the 1500m with 4:52.21. Another running highlight was the 400m relay team consisting of Lock, Alysia Evanitsky, Rosato, and Benson placing second in the time of 52.62. Other scorers included Lauren Cephas, placing fifth in the 400m in 62.42 and eighth in the 200m with 27.74, and Evanitsky, scoring third in the 400m with 61.29.

The team’s success should continue this Saturday at the RPI Invitation. The meet will start at 11 am at the Harkness Track.
