The men’s baseball team is holding a youth baseball camp called “Get Ready for Summer” for little league players from the surrounding community on Thursday at Robison Field.

Players ages 7 to 12 will participate in drills, short games, and other activities from 10 am to 12 pm. The Red Hawks’ coaches and the majority of the players will teach the youth about all aspects of baseball including hitting, fielding, and pitching.

The baseball players enjoy working with the little leaguers because it gives them a chance to be role models for the children. “I enjoy knowing how much the kids appreciate the work that we do [for them] ... These kids look up to us,” said co-captain Seth Shuket.

It also gives them an opportunity to teach the kids about the intangible parts of the game of baseball that many other camps neglect in favor of pushing standard drills and exercises.

After having the experience of playing at the college level, “you realize what’s good to teach [younger players],” said co-captain Pat Hughes.

A big piece of that is showing the little leaguers how much fun the game can be by involving them in real games.

“The more that we can help [them], the better they will be,” said Hughes.

The little league players participating in the baseball camp will bring their own personal equipment, including batting gloves, helmets, and bats, but the Red Hawks will provide the equipment necessary for instruction, such as balls and cones.

Registration for the camp will begin one hour before the start of the clinic’s activities, and players will need to have a parent or guardian with them to register.

The camp was originally scheduled to take place on Wednesday and Thursday, but was canceled along with Wednesday’s game due to a rainy forecast.
