The men’s and women’s crew programs traveled to Shelton, Conn. last weekend to compete in the Spring Starts Housatonic Regatta. Co-hosted by NCAA Division I powerhouses Sacred Heart and Fairfield Universities, the competition was expected to be stiff.

In the first event of the day, the women’s second varsity 8+, Rensselaer edged out their Division I rival Fairfield in a photo finish. “It was an exciting finish. The officials spent nearly an hour reviewing the video footage of the end of the race before any results were available. Our athletes delivered a solid performance,” said Coach Todd Rutecki. Other competitors in the event included Sacred Heart University, Fairfield B, and Quinnipiac.

Due to inclement conditions, all of the other scheduled events were canceled.

The Red Hawks will next compete on April 5 at home against UCAA opponent St. Lawrence University. They will also race at the Skidmore Invitational Regatta on April 6 in Saratoga Springs.
