Hoops to face UC, Hamilton in playoffs

The women’s basketball team swept their weekend games, winning over William Smith 71-56 Friday and 76-72 over Hamilton on Saturday.

Friday, at William Smith, the Red Hawks dominated from the start. The Red Hawks leapt out to a 37-29 lead at the half. The Herons looked to make a comeback, but Rensselaer defense held strong, holding William Smith to 27 points in the second half. Kaitlyn Saunders led the way for RPI, shooting 10-12 from the floor. Saunders scored a team high of 23 points, and Kristin Kaczynski scored 19 points.

The women looked to improve to 16-8 on the season in a Saturday matinee against Hamilton College. The Red Hawks struggled from the floor in the first half, connecting on only 39 percent of their shots. The Continentals took the lead in the first half 38-34.

The Red Hawks stormed back in the second half, improving their shooting and outscoring the Herons by eight to win the game 76-72. Saunders again led the way for RPI, scoring 19 points. Vestal also scored 19 points and Kaczynski contributed 18 in the come-from-behind victory. The Red Hawks finish this season16-8, and will battle Union in the UCAA tournament.

The men’s basketball team split over the weekend, defeating Hobart, but falling by two to Hamilton College. They will take on Hamilton again in the first round of the UCAA tournament.
