The women’s hockey team had yet another successful weekend, besting Union twice. Friday night saw Rensselaer quickly bury Union. Christina Jankowski scored less than three minutes into the game to start the scoring for the Engineers. Deanna Dougherty scored at 13:27 and 15 seconds later freshman Julie Welte scored with help from Dougherty and Katie Woodward.

The Engineers took full advantage of the power play, when given the chance. Just 30 seconds into the first Rensselaer power play, Christin Sauca centered the puck to Meredith Langille who drove the puck home at 15:21.

Dougherty and Woodward put the game away in the third period with a goal each. Union’s Elizabeth Flanagan scored at 19:38, but it was too little, too late for the Dutchwomen. Rosina Schiff stopped 20 of 21 shots that Union threw at her, and Dougherty led the way with two goals and two assists. Welte tallied a goal and two assists, but her best performance was yet to come.

Saturday saw the Dutchwomen put up a much greater struggle. Union started off the scoring with a goal from Carolyn Simon. Rensselaer fired right back with a goal less than two minutes later, when Welte fired a puck past UC goalie Dana Smullyan. The next five minutes of the game saw three goals. Woodward found the net with help from Lane Dielwart, and Jennifer Onksen tallied a goal 34 seconds later to push the score to 3-1 in favor of the Engineers. Dutchwomen Samantha Glover scored 39 seconds later to bring UC within one. Welte’s second goal of the game brought the score up to 4-2.

Welte’s scoring continued shortly after the period break. Less than a minute into the second period she capped off her hat trick with an unassisted goal. Welte found the scoring touch again when, on the power play, she snapped a shot into the net on assists from Kari Rabatin and Woodward. Union’s Glover scored her second goal of the game on a four-on-four and Molly Flannagan scored with less than a minute left to pull within two.

Welte tallied her 21st goal of the season and her fifth of the game at 5:42. Dougherty capped off the scoring for Rensselaer, scoring the eighth goal of the game with help from Maj Nixon and Woodward. Engineers’ Julie Vallarelli stopped 14 shots en route to her 12th win of the year.

The women’s team will take on the Salve Regina Seahawks in the first round of the ECAC East Playoffs. The puck drops at 2 pm Saturday afternoon.
