Women’s hockey deserves support of campus

Posted 02-27-2003 at 5:24PM

The women’s hockey team is having a great season this year. They finished the regular season in second place behind powerhouse Manhattanville and will play at home in the first round of the playoffs.

For some reason, women’s hockey doesn’t have nearly the attendance of the men’s game. Perhaps it’s becausE the women Engineers play the same game with slightly different rules—women aren’t allowed to check. In spite of this, true hockey fans and RPI supporters should go see the women play.

The games that the women play at the Field House are just as exciting as the men’s games. Although the women play Division III teams in the ECAC East, there are just as many compelling rivalries. The women beat Union twice at home last weekend, and have sparked many other heated match-ups this season.

This year, the women’s hockey team has experienced unparalleled success. They have only lost three games in conference, and only have non-conference losses to Division I schools. The women have shown their extreme prowess on the ice, tallying 118 goals, and posting nine shutouts.

Playoffs for the women start on Saturday, when they take on Salve Regina at home. For those who have not followed the women’s team this year, the Engineers beat Salve 10-0 and 8-0 earlier this season. This first round match-up should be a great one for RPI fans to watch, and will hopefully provide momentum for the later rounds.

The Poly would like to wish the women’s hockey team good luck and offer our full support throughout the playoffs.
