To start off the long weekend, the Rensselaer indoor track and field team traveled to the Hamilton College on February 15, to compete in the UCAA indoor track and field championships. The men and women both had a very successful meet, each placing second to St. Lawrence, but defeating competitors Hamilton and Union colleges with many outstanding performances.
The women’s team had numerous athletes finishing within the top three, which led them to a team score of 136 versus the St. Lawrence score of 268, Hamilton with 55, and Union with 20. In the individual track events, junior Claire Lears earned a first place finish in the 5000 m with a time of 19:56.41, and fellow junior Rebecca Rosenberg-Beran earned first in both the 3000 m with 10:39.26 and the 1500 m with 4:50.54.
Sophomore Jess Pearson was another top scoring athlete in the field events, winning the pole vault with a jump of 10’ 6”. In addition, Pearson and junior Allison Benson, who finished second in the pole vault, each broke the UCAA meet record with the height of 10’ 6”. Among the other outstanding athletes was sophomore Alysia Evanitsky, who was named UCAA Women’s Rookie of the Meet. Evanitsky scored third in the 400 m and the 200 m with respective times of 61.41 and 28.02. She was also a member of the 1600 m relay team which earned second place in the time of 4:30.81.
The men’s team had many exciting performances as well on the way to earning second place. The Rensselaer team scored 177 points to St. Lawrence’s 209, Hamilton’s 52, and Union’s 52. The Rensselaer first place finishes in the track events included senior Paul Salasznyk with 23.47 in the 200 m and junior Dwaine Alleyne with 7.93 in the 55 m hurdles. In the field events, Alleyne earned another first place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 13.33 m and graduate student Jeff Banks also earned first with the height of 14’ in the pole vault. In addition, senior Mike Johnson set a new UCAA meet record in the weight throw, winning the event with a mark of 16.35 m. Johnson’s mark provisionally qualified him to compete in the NCAA meet as well.
Rensselaer’s success in the UCAA championship meet has demonstrated the team’s strength and proves encouraging for the season’s upcoming meets. The team continues to train for the Denault Invitational at Cornell as well as the NYSCTC Pentathlon Championship at the University of Rochester, both of which will be held next weekend.
