Take time to reflect during this Black History Month

Posted 02-12-2003 at 2:41PM

Since 1926, Americans have been celebrating Black history in some form. In a lot of ways Black History Month has become a time of token appreciation for African-Americans and all they have suffered. Considering the ongoing fight for equal rights and respect, however, it should not be dismissed so readily.

There are a lot of reasons to honor heroes of the abolitionist and civil rights movement, such as Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Rosa Parks, as well as African-Americans who have made a difference in our society as actors, musicians, military leaders, and scientists.

Throughout the month, many events will be taking place to promote diversity throughout campus. While many of the events do celebrate the Black community on campus, the celebration of diversity also embraces the entire multicultural community.

Some of the events include a poetry slam sponsored by Lambda Upsilon Lambda on the 18th; Night of Expression with the theme “Roots,” sponsored by National Society of Black Engineers on the 19th; and Rensselaer Muslim Women’s Association’s “Journey to Success” with Dr. Zoaer Mohamed, also on the 19th. The month will conclude with closing ceremonies, a reflection, and a book signing on the 28th. For a more complete list of events, contact the Office of the First-Year Experience at 276-6864.

Recognizing and participating in a Black History Month provides an opportunity to understand different cultures and enhance unity on campus. Even if your participation is limited to reading a short biography on a historical figure or just attending one of the lectures, it’s important to make an effort to experience African-American culture in some way. It is, after all, a large part of being a citizen in our global world.
