Despite no team scores many qualify for NCAAs
McGough, Evansitsky, Rosenberg-Beran win events

Katie Best Special to The Poly After traveling about two hours south to West Point, NY on Saturday, the Rensselaer Track and Field teams once again put forth their best efforts in competition with teams from Hamilton, Mohawk Valley, Stevens Technical, Union, and West Point. Although there was no team scoring at the meet, both the men’s and the women’s teams had many athletes place in a scoring position within their events.
On the men’s team in the track events, the first place finishes were achieved by junior Derek McGough with a time of 6.52 seconds in the 55m dash and senior Mike Winnick with 1:58.1 in the 800m. Both of the men’s relay teams, for the 1600m and the 3200m, also won their events with respective times of 3:31.10 and 8:25.62. The top Rensselaer athletes in the field events included senior Mike Johnson with 15.55m in the weight throw, junior Dwaine Alleyne with 13.75m in triple jump, and McGough with 6.81 m in the long jump. In addition, senior Jeff Banks won the pole vault with a mark of 15’ 1” and provisionally qualified for the NCAA meet.
The women had similar successes on the track and in the field. First place finishes among the track events were awarded to sophomore Alysia Evanitsky with 1:23.38 in the 500m and junior Rebecca Rosenberg-Beran with 3:06.65 in the 1000m. The women’s 1600m relay team also won their event in the time of 4:20.83. On the field, junior Allison Benson vaulted 10’ 8” to capture first place in the pole vault.
Next week the team will travel to New Hampshire for the Dartmouth Invitational for another chance to display their talents and improve upon performances. |
