The men’s basketball team enjoyed an exciting weekend, facing off with the Hamilton Continentals and the Hobart Statesmen.

The Red Hawks started the Friday game strong, dominating the boards on offense and defense. They were having problems, though, with turnovers, as the Continentals scored six of their first points off of Red Hawk turnovers. Watervliet High School graduate Kevin Yanni was leading the way for Hamilton, scoring the first 18 points for the Continentals.

The first half continued in this manner for the Red Hawks, with Jared Hite leading the way on the scoreboard and the backboard. Hite led RPI with 18 rebounds on the day, grabbing 10 on offense.

Rensselaer went into the second half with a 12 point deficit to make up. Despite being down 34-22, the Red Hawks fought back with an impressive 13-point run. The Continentals tied the score off of the sharp shooting by guard Greg Leone.

The teams traded the lead for the next four minutes, but Hamilton then took control of the game.

Yanni made two three pointers in the last three minutes to seal the game. The Red Hawks tried, in vain, to foul their way back into the game, but the Continentals sank four of their last five free throws and won the game 71-62.

Yanni led the way for Hamilton, scoring a game high 27 points and pulling down seven rebounds. Hite and Humphrey Mitchell led the way for the Red Hawks, pouring in 15 points each.

On Saturday, the Red Hawks fired out of the gates, leading all through the first half. Freshman Tom Schneider led the team in the first half, and the team went into the locker room leading 32-27. The Statesmen, who only brought seven players, looked tired and very out-hustled in the first half.

Four minutes into the second half, the visiting Statesmen took the lead from Rensselaer on stellar foul shooting by Davidek Herron. The teams played back-and-forth basketball for the next five minutes, with neither team leading by more than three points.

Hobart took a lead with 10 minutes remaining, but the Red Hawks closed the gap to cut the lead to one point. The Red Hawks took the lead with jump shots by Kevin Moore and Kori Massey.

The Statesmen scored two three pointers to cut into the Red Hawk lead, but RPI sank another long-range jumper and free-throw to go up by three with 34 seconds left.

Hobart took a timeout to draw up a play. They in-bounded the ball and got it to Herron, their best shooter. He missed the three, but Marques Rhodes grabbed the rebound and passed the ball to Tim Lomot, who drained the three with 19 seconds left to tie the game at 75.

RPI took their time coming up the floor, and gave the ball to Moore. Moore drove towards the basket and pulled up for a jumper. The shot flew off the iron, but Moore crashed the boards and tipped in his own shot with two seconds left to win the game for the Red Hawks.

Schneider led the way for the Red Hawks, hitting on nine of 12 field goals and scoring 21 points. Hite again led the way on the boards, grabbing 11 rebounds.

With the weekend split, the Red Hawks are 10-8, with a 4-3 conference record. They will take on St. Lawrence and Clarkson at the Robison Gym next weekend. Tip-offs are at 6 pm Friday and 2 pm Saturday.
