To the Editor:

I wholeheartedly agree with the editorial on January 22 concerning the misuse of Campus News.

When I received this propaganda piece, three things caught my attention.

First, the piece was attributed to “The Institute.” Who exactly is that? If it is the President, say that. If it is the Board of Trustees, say that. Let whoever is releasing the piece stand up and take credit.

Second, the title read “Union Cancels Today’s Scheduled Vote.” I believe that actually the National Labor Relations Board cancelled the vote, I am not sure that the union has that authority.

Lastly, I found ironic the complaint that the union published employees home phone numbers without their consent. I found out recently that RPI did the same thing to me when they published my home phone number and address in the student directory without my consent. I found upon investigation that I can have that information withheld from the published directory, but the invasion of my privacy had already been done.

I do not have a strong opinion about whether the RPI employees should be part of a union; that is really their business. But recent actions remind me of a quote from John Fanning, a former chair of the NLRB. He said, “It is my opinion that when a union enters a workplace, it is because they have been invited there by the actions of the employer.”
