Interfraternity Council IFC starts with full strength
Posted 01-29-2003 at 2:55PM
Travis J. Lull Interfraternity Council Vice President for Public Relations On behalf of the Interfraternity Council, I’d like to welcome all students, faculty, and staff back for the spring semester. In only two weeks, everything is already in full swing including the IFC, which has started out the semester with amazing force. We have already shown our strength and determination. After only the first week of classes, the Executive Boards of both the IFC and the Panhellenic Association along with the presidents of every chapter met for the annual greek leaders retreat, which was a “unifying experience,” as the IFC intends on showing in the upcoming months. Three days later, the second annual Communiversity event in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “Embrace the Dream,” proved to be a wonderful success in thanks largely to greeks. Two-thirds of total involvement was made up of over 100 members of greek chapters.
The activities and involvement described above are only a sample of the leadership opportunities that greek life can offer. The Dean of Students Office sponsored the greek leaders retreat mentioned above during which we continued to assess our status and pursue the principles set forth three years ago at a similar conference: leadership, innovation, fortitude, and evolution. The new IFC E-Board has wasted no time in learning the ropes and is working as hard as ever to continually live up to those four principles and become a model greek system in the process.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was just the first exhibition of the importance of community relations to the IFC this semester. Last semester brought problems between Institute organizations and the surrounding community to the forefront. Our vice president of philanthropy has many ideas and is instituting them in an effort to give back directly to the Troy community. Focusing on campus issues, specifically women’s issues, the IFC has already agreed to help run V-Day and the White Ribbon Campaign. Rather than women asking men to agree to help stop violence against women, greek men will be working in the Union from February 18-28, handing out white ribbons to all those who agree to help in the continued fight. Please stop in and show your support.
This is just a brief example of what fraternities and sororities have to offer; these organizations offer many advantages and opportunities. If you’ve never considered yourself the fraternity or sorority type—as I did not—or simply haven’t been interested previously, I encourage you to take a look at what they have to offer. With such an expansive greek system, every chapter being different, there’s probably a place for you. If you have any questions about greek life, please feel free to contact me at lullt@rpi.edu. | |
