The Rensselaer Red Hawks opened their UCAA conference games this weekend. They faced the Union Dutchmen on Friday night and the Skidmore Thoroughbreds, Saturday afternoon.
Both games were played with great intensity, but the Red Hawks couldn’t pull off a win and fell 0-2 in conference play.
“This is an extremely disappointing start for the real season. We are now in a big hole that we have to dig our way out of,” Coach Griffin said.
In their first game against the Dutchmen, the Red Hawks started off slowly. The first half was marked by inconsistent play.
Poor ball handling led to eight turnovers in the first half. The Red Hawks also had trouble controlling the boards, especially on the offensive end. The score at the end of the first half was 24-33.
Down by nine after the first half the Red Hawks had something to prove. Off of a steal by Paris Moore, Kevin Moore dunked the ball after seven minutes of play to bring the Red Hawks within one.
This move had the crowd on their feet. Sensing the emotion from the crowd, the Red Hawks began to play some serious basketball. Moore hit three 3 pointers back to back to close the gap after 15 minutes of play.
As the clock was winding down, Kevin Moore hit another three point shot to cut the Dutchmen’s lead to three.
With one minute and two seconds left of play Kevin Moore stole the ball, but Kori Massey missed the three point shot that would have cut the Dutchmen’s lead to one. The Red Hawks were able to get the offensive rebound though and called a time out.
Coming out of the time out with 46 seconds left to play, Matt Zepernick hit a jumper and the Red Hawks were down 57-59.
The Dutchmen brought the ball down the court, but Phil Henry missed the lay-up for Union and Matt grabbed the rebound.
With 12 seconds left to play the ball was handed to the man who seemed to have the hot hand in the second half, Kevin Moore. He missed a three point shot, but his teammate Kori Massey was there to grab the offensive rebound.
The ball went back into the hands of Kevin Moore, but he just couldn’t get a good shot off and the Red Hawks fell to the Dutchmen 57-59.
For the second game of the weekend, the Red Hawks went up against the Skidmore Thoroughbreds, the Red Hawks came to play. They managed to make great shots to take the lead early on.
In some instances the Red Hawks showed great passing ability. Towards the end of the half with 32 seconds left to play, sophomore guard Paris Moore stole the ball and Jared Hite hit a jumper and was fouled, which led to a three point play giving RPI a lead of seven.
The Red Hawks started the second half of play, the same way they ended the first, with good ball movement and rebounding.
They continued to play well throughout most of the second half, but fatigue must have set in since they played a game the night before.
With a little over five minutes left to play in the second half sophomore guard J.P. Corry stole the ball and sophomore guard Mike Murray of the Thoroughbreds made the lay-up to tie the game 57-57.
The Red Hawks could not bounce back and they fell to the Skidmore Thoroughbreds 72-63.
