The women’s soccer team suffered an early exit from the ECAC tournament on Wednesday. The team traveled to Geneseo to take on the Lady Knights. Geneseo struck early, scoring just 1:35 into the game. Jackie Fertitta headed a shot past Red Hawks’ goalkeeper Andrea Hamill to give the Lady Knights a 1-0 lead. Fertitta continued to harass the Red Hawks defense, shooting a pass into the box to Nicole Santariello, who easily scored to give Geneseo a 2-0 lead.

The Lady Knights kept up the pressure, and just over a minute later, freshman Maureen Hilliker scored to put RPI into a 3-0 hole. The game remained 3-0, as both teams’ goaltenders smothered the offenses. At 81:46, though, Geneseo’s Torie Mitchell bounced a shot over Red Hawks goalie Andrea Hamill to give the Lady Knights a four goal lead.

The lone Rensselaer goal came with just 44 seconds remaining in the game, when the Red Hawks’ leading scorer, Susan Gonyea, fired in a shot from a cross by Mia Corcione.

The 4-1 defeat bounced RPI from the ECAC tournament. They completed their season with a record of 12-5-1, and several players earned honors for superior play and academic excellence.
