Sorrow for Xu

To the Editor:

It is astounding for us to hear that our esteemed teacher, Professor Shubo Xu, left us suddenly in a distant land. Here in China we express our deepest sorrow and offer heartfelt condolences to Shubo’s family. We understand that his family members are experiencing extreme pain and grief at the loss of their beloved one.

With tears in our eyes and sadness in our hearts, we cannot help recalling the time that he had together with us, both in China and in the USA, and the significant work that he did for RPI and for us. He was enormously devoted to the Sino-US MBA program and tried his best to clear any obstacles and dissolve any difficulties for hundreds of young Chinese talents on their way to the USA. We remember the interview he conducted with us, the first step to our American dream. We remember the hard time he shared with us when applying for visas and happiness that he shared with us after we passed. With his facilitation and concern, we were able to execute our steps to the land overseas and realize our American dreams in the shortest time possible. We also remember in the United States the many parties he held at his home for bringing us much laughter, happiness, and less homesickness. We were all impressed with his carefulness and help in various ways to our study and life on the campus of RPI. He regarded us both as students and friends—even as family members.

Shubo was so proud to take us to the American business school and he often encouraged us to succeed in the international business arena. His selfless commitment to the Sino-US MBA education made a great contribution to the Sino-US culture and education exchange. His passion for training top business leaders to be Chinese country fellows will extend RPI’s global reach across China. As Shubo’s students we will not disappoint his memory in the future.

Shubo had done so much for his students, but we did so little to reward him. It is unfair that we do not have such a chance to make it up any longer. We feel deep regret when thinking of that.

Here, we would say, what he had done to us will be kept in our deep hearts forever, together with his gentle smile and kind image, just like evergreen mountains and endlessly flowing rivers. His kindness and benefaction to us, as large as the seas, will be remembered by us forever. His spirit will be with us forever. And he will be in our memory forever!

May Shubo rest in peace in heaven!
