This past Saturday the RPI women’s soccer team beat out the Skidmore Thoroughbreds, 3-0.
The first half was marked by aggressive play on both sides, primarily dominated by RPI. The game was very much back and forth, with very strong defense on both sides. There was a very good save by Emma Smaldino of the Thoroughbreds at 14:20, but otherwise there weren’t any close calls for the half.
The beginning of the second half was marked by much the same tone. At 38:49 RPI finally scored the first goal of the game as Susan Gonyea followed through on a feed from Mia Covione. Following the goal, the RPI team started to pull together and was really playing together. At 37:00 Hamill made a very good save, preventing the Thoroughbreds from getting on the board.
RPI became a lot more aggressive and following some rough play around the goal, they won their second goal at 31:15 by Covcione with no assist. Liz Vitaliano followed through on an assist by Betsy Farmer for the third goal at 26:35.
Friday’s game was a little more challenging for the Red Hawks, with a tough game against the Union Dutchmen. RPI came out ahead, 4-3 after a close game.
The first half was dominated by the Red Hawks. The first goal was scored by Susan Gonyea with no assists at 30:25. A second goal followed at 25:27 made by Vitaliano on an assist by Lisa McMillan. The Red Hawk’s scoring was rounded out for the half with a goal by Vitaliano on an feed by Katie Fredlund at 21:30. The half was mostly quiet until the Dutchmen mustered up an unassisted goal by Alaina LaRocca with 2:44 remaining.
In the second half, Union started making a comeback, with Lindsay Kroell scoring a goal at 27:46, and another by LaRocca at 5:25 to tie up the game. RPI pulled the game away from them when McMillan scored a goal on an assist by Corcione with 4:09 remaining in the game.
This weekend puts RPI at 6-0 for the season. The women’s soccer team will be playing again on October 6 at 1 pm against Keuka.
