Hello everyone. I hope everyone has been studying hard and keeping up with their work as many classes have tests and presentations this week.
This week I would like to take the opportunity to address an issue that I hear a lot about. As I walk around campus, I often hear some students expressing their unhappiness about their classes, RPI, or Troy. This negativity seems to be a growing trend around campus and it has even been reported about in our school publications. The best way I feel to change that negative feeling or discourse is for everyone to directly address it on an individual basis. If you have a problem or complaint about your environment, then change it. There are ears listening and opportunities to be directly involved in making a difference. As a student of Rensselaer you are given numerous opportunities to succeed and take part in student-run organizations. The Union is student run for the purpose of serving students, and it sponsors over 130 clubs and organizations. With over 130 clubs and organizations, the Union offers something for everyone, and if we don’t have your club then its easy to start your own! Instead of constantly focusing on what you may not have, take advantage of what is offered. College is the best four years of your life; there is no doubt of that. So enjoy your college experience by trying new things, getting involved, and taking advantage of everything offered on campus.
In our meeting this past week, the Executive Board received two business proposals, one of which was a contingency request from Habitat for Humanity, whom I would like to showcase this week. Habitat for Humanity is one the quickest growing clubs, with over two hundred members and this year is only their second year as a Union club. The club renovates and builds houses in partnership with those in need of adequate shelter. They have received national recognition from Habitat for Humanity International for their commitment and hard work. If you are interested in joining the club or would like more information about their current projects, check out their website at http://habitat.union.rpi.edu.
As always, everyone is welcome to attend Executive Board meetings, which are held on Wednesdays at 7:30 pm in the Patroon Room of the Union. Please feel free to send me any questions or comments at pu@rpi.edu, call x8598 or stop by the office in the Union Room 3136.
