On the strength of some outstanding pitching, including a no-hitter by sophomore Brian Brzek, the Red Hawks won two of their three games last week.

Last Wednesday RPI travelled to Wayne, N.J., to take on William Paterson. The Pioneers got three early runs off RPI starter Travis Teeter and took advantage of three Red Hawk errors to pull out a 6-3 victory.

Rensselaer had two major chances to get back in the game, but their top hitters came up empty. In the top of the seventh with the score 4-2, the Red Hawks put runners at the corners with two outs, but pinch hitter Scott Gianoni grounded out to the pitcher. In the eighth with one run already in, Teeter came up with two outs and the bases loaded but he popped up, ending the threat.

For the weekend the Red Hawks made the trek up to the North Country, starting off with St. Lawrence on Saturday. The Saints did not score an earned run in either game as RPI swept them 3-1 and 7-0.

Max Miller scattered four hits and struck out seven to pick up the win in game one. St. Lawrence’s only run came when Miller overthrew second base after fielding a grounder. RPI picked up two runs in the fifth on a pair of errors by the Saints and padded their lead in the last inning when a Steven Palmer sacrifice fly scored Teeter.

The Red Hawks picked up a pair of runs in the top of the first, and that was all the offense Brzek needed. He struck out 13 Saints in seven innings and walked only one. Flynn Cochran cemented the win with a grand slam in the sixth.

RPI’s doubleheader at Clarkson on Sunday got snowed out, leaving the UCAA title still in doubt. The Red Hawks are currently 8-1 in the conference; the Golden Knights are 8-2. The makeup for those games is set for May 11.

Rensselaer still has one other league game remaining, Thursday at Vassar. RPI will also play Friday at St. Rose, and they close out their home schedule Saturday with a makeup game versus New Paltz at 1 pm.
