The women’s lacrosse team put up a good fight against the No. 4 team in the state, but couldn’t quite pull off an upset, falling to Nazareth in double overtime by a score of 10-9.
The Golden Flyers ran off four straight goals before Mary Roy put RPI on the board with 11 minutes remaining in the first half, which ended with Nazareth up 5-2.
The first part of the second half was back-and-forth, but the Red Hawks picked things up late in the game, going on a four-goal run punctuated by Ann Larsen’s score at the 6:32 mark that tied the game at seven. Nazareth’s Lorra Podsiadlo, who notched four goals in the game, fired back less than 30 seconds later to put the Golden Flyers back in front, and the score remained frozen there as most of the game ticked away. Finally, Kim Yates broke through for Rensselaer with 37 seconds left in regulation.
Stephanie Smolos’ third goal 31 seconds into OT gave Nazareth another lead, and the Red Hawks again tied it up with seconds to spare, this time on a goal by Mary Roy. Podsiadlo tallied her final goal 23 seconds into the second extra period, and RPI could not find another tying goal.
Mary Beth Cooley scored three times for the Red Hawks, and Roy collected two goals and an assist. Meghan Gaul made 12 stops in goal; this combined with her 20-save effort last Tuesday against Vassar earned her UCAA Goaltender of the Week honors.
The Red Hawks, now 2-6 overall, make the trip up to the North Country this weekend, playing St. Lawrence on Friday at 4 pm and Clarkson on Saturday at 2 pm.
