The Skidmore Thoroughbreds jumped out to a 9-1 first-quarter lead and held off the Red Hawks for the remaining 45 minutes, defeating RPI’s men’s lacrosse team 17-13 on Saturday.

Freshman Nick Culotti spearheaded the offense with six goals, but no other Red Hawk scored more than once. Goalie Matt Moog had an off day, allowing 13 goals and making just 14 saves in 47 minutes of play.

The game was clearly one of the worst of the season for Rensselaer, the 19th-ranked team in the nation. The Red Hawks were down a man for 10:30 of the game due to nine penalties, the most they’ve taken all year. Skidmore outshot RPI 47-28, and their 17 goals is the highest total permitted by the Red Hawk defense in 2002.

Rensselaer, now 1-1 in the UCAA, continues its conference schedule this evening with a game at Hamilton, followed by another away match on Saturday against Clarkson.
