THE RPI FENCING CLUB HOSTED the ninth annual RPI Open on Sunday, featuring fencers from all over New York State and New England.

Three weapons are used in Olympic-style fencing, each with slightly different rules. The valid target area for foil, a light thrusting weapon, is the torso. Epées are heavier piercing weapons—the entire body is fair game in an epée bout. Everything above the waist is fair game with a sabre, which a slashing weapon.

In the top photo, Jay Choi (left) parries a lunge from Darius Wei during the mixed sabre competition. Wei won the bout and went on to place second in the tournament, falling to Philip Dolata in the final match.

In the bottom photo, Duke Cabin and Scott Rizzo face off in the final match for mixed foil. Cabin won the bout 15-8 to take home first place in that event, ending a three-year run by Nobal Clark, who could not compete in this year’s tournament.
