The men’s lacrosse team opened its conference season by pounding the Vassar Brewers 23-1 last week, but could not maintain that momentum, losing to Nazareth on Saturday by a score of 13-10.
RPI Head Coach Jim Townsend said at the beginning of the season that the only non-competitive team in the conference would be the Brewers—only in their second year of UCAA play—and his Red Hawks proved it, outshooting Vassar by a 54-10 margin and establishing an 8-0 lead before their hosts could find the net even once.
Sophomores Jeff Hobbs and Andrew Teichman each scored a game-high six goals to lead the offense, and Matthew Moog and Joe Garvey split time in goal, each making four stops in 30 minutes of play. Freshman Tom Haff picked up his first collegiate points, collecting two goals and two assists. He also won seven of his eight faceoffs and was named UCAA Co-Rookie of the Week.
The No. 10 Golden Flyers were tougher opponents for RPI, now 5-2 on the season. Nazareth got on the board less than a minute into the game on a Jarod Koopman goal, but the Red Hawks’ Ryan Frisch tied it up 42 seconds later. The first half continued in the same back and forth manner, with consecutive goals by Lucas Ruglis, Hobbs, and Nick Culotti giving Rensselaer its only lead of the game with 6:26 left in the first half.
Nazareth’s Josh Lewis retaliated with three straight goals—he had six in the game. A Frisch goal with 14 seconds remaining meant that the Red Hawks ended the half down 7-6.
The Golden Flyers had a strong showing in the third quarter, outscoring RPI 4-1, including a shot by Brian Roden that just beat the horn.
The Red Hawks fought back in the final period, with the freshman duo of Culotti and Frisch combining for three unanswered goals to pull within one with 5:01 to play. Lewis was again the answer for Nazareth—only 12 seconds elapsed before he found the back of the net once again, and the Golden Flyers added another score with 1:18 left to seal the victory.
Moog played a big part in keeping the game close, stopping 27 shots. Culotti ended the day with four goals and an assist, Frisch scored three times with three assists, and Hobbs added a pair of goals to earn UCAA Player of the Week honors.
The Red Hawks’ next match is at home against the Skidmore Thoroughbreds on Saturday at 2 pm.
