The women’s softball team went 3-1 this weekend in two doubleheaders versus SUNY-New Paltz on Friday evening and Cazenovia on Saturday afternoon at their home field, improving their overall record to 7-6.
The Red Hawks swept New Paltz, winning 10-0 in game one and 6-2 in game two. Leanna Smith led RPI in the first game with two singles, a double, and three RBI, while junior Sara Jurta went 2-3 with two RBI for the Red Hawks. Pitcher Shannon Smith threw seven strikeouts to earn her fourth win of the 2002 season.
In game two, the Red Hawks jumped on their opponents, scoring two runs in the first inning and another two in the third and not allowing the visitors to score until the fifth inning. Sophomore outfielder Laura Feeney went three-for-three, including two doubles, two RBI, and two runs scored to lead the Red Hawks in completing the sweep. Shortstop Stacey Eisenman added one hit, one run, and two RBI, while freshman Liz Vitaliano also had two hits. Starting pitcher Danielle Haberman came away with a win and Shannon Smith earned her first save of the season by getting the last seven outs of the game.
On Saturday, the Red Hawks split their doubleheader versus Cazenovia, losing the first game 5-0 and winning the second game 5-1. In game one, Cazenovia came on strong in the first inning with three runs and added a fourth in the second inning. The opposing pitcher had seven strikeouts and only allowed Rensselaer five hits total—RPI couldn’t get any players into scoring position.
In game two, the Red Hawks showed tremendous defense, only allowing one run in the final inning. At the plate, RPI was led by Vitaliano and Feeney who each went three-for-three. Vitaliano had two triples, three RBI, two runs scored, and a stolen base. Pitcher Danielle Haberman added another win to her record, now 3-3.
The Red Hawks played Tuesday night at Williams College. Results of that game were not available in time for publication.
This week’s schedule starts with a home doubleheader against Manhattanville on Saturday starting at 1 pm, and continues with a game at Ithaca on Sunday at 1 pm.
