Do you think spending your Saturday night on campus is a waste of time? Well, not last Saturday. While The Players were drawing in a crowd, UPAC Mainstage filled the Union. The crowd squeezed into Mother’s to see Roy Atkinson, then moved up to the McNeil Room to catch Jamie Lissow, a stand-up comedian. A few minutes of shorts were shown on the big screen, then Within Reach took the stage, and the Union was filled with screaming students dancing and singing along with the band. This concert will surely go down in UPAC history! Be sure to catch UPAC again with another big show in the fall!
If performances are not your thing, perhaps you need something more quiet. Perhaps you need a place to get away and to think? Do you need something to take your mind off schoolwork, friends, and all the other crazy things in your life? I have a great solution for you—come to the Union’s Shelnutt Gallery. Yes, the Union has a gallery and it’s free!
The gallery is located on the top level of the Union 3602. This space does not house a permanent collection of work. Rather, the Shelnutt displays change every couple of months in an effort to bring a variety of work to the campus. This room has housed both professional and student work, both local artists, and those from all over the country.
Currently, the works of John Pinder Huges, Lamerol Gatewood, and Frank Wimberley are on display. These artists have won many awards and have collections all over the country in galleries such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Studio Museum in Harlem, Howard University Art Gallery, and many more.
John Pinder Huges is a photographer whose wonderful work celebrates his love for nature. His current collection is titled “Majestic Vista—Landscapes of Eastern Long Island” and was inspired by his family’s home on East End Beach, Long Island. Lamerol Gatewood’s collection of figurative works on canvas are full of brilliant color and motion and are constructed with a multitude of media including acrylic paint, collage, glitter, and paper weave. Frank Wimberley’s collection includes expressionist paintings of richly textured dark hues with nuances of integrated color.
If visual art is not your thing, how about something a bit more rowdy, like hockey? Just a reminder that this weekend marks the last of the men’s home hockey games. Come watch them play rivals Cornell Friday night and Colgate Saturday. As always, both games will be held in the Houston Field House. What’s so unusual about these games is the entertainment between periods.
The Interfraternity Council is hosting the first ever IFC Intermission Competition. Each night will feature two individuals from five different fraternities competing against each other on the ice. The Troy Fire Department is helping the contest by donating fire suits for the event. Each individual will have to run across the ice gathering, and then putting on the uniform, and handing off the uniform to the next contestant. For those of you who have never been on the ice, this will not be easy. So come show your support for hockey, for the IFC, and for RPI; this is surely something that you won’t want to miss!
