Throughout RPI’s 177-year history, a number of famous individuals have been recognized for making noteworthy contributions to the growth of the Institute. These include its founders, Steven van Rensselaer and Amos Eaton, and more recently alumni Alan M. Voorhees, a civil planner, and Ray Tomlinson, the inventor of network e-mail.

The contributions of current members of the Rensselaer community, however, often go unnoticed. Administrators help to fulfill the Institute’s goals and judiciously direct the course of the Institute’s future. Professors cultivate both student minds in the classroom and knowledge in the research laboratory. Students develop Rensselaer’s culture. Staff keep the Institute running and ensure that it runs smoothly.

The question The Poly is asking you to answer is “Who has made the most significant contribution to RPI recently?” Your answer to that question will direct us toward the winner of the Person of the Year 2001 Competition.

We are presently collecting nominations from members of Rensselaer’s entire community at large. Nominations should be sent by e-mail to features@poly.rpi.edu.

Nominate the person who you feel has made the most significant contribution to the Institute during the year 2001. Be sure to explain your reason for choosing your nominee.

The Poly’s editorial staff will select finalists from the pool of nominations and print their profiles later in the semester. The Poly readers will provide input into the final decision on the person of the year by voting on the Poly website poll at //www.poly.rpi.edu/, and the results will be announced in a later issue of The Poly.

So, who is your choose for Person of the Year?
