Have you noticed anything new about the Union this semester? Well, there have been a few small changes here and there, but one in particular that should be recognized. There are 16 new Ethernet ports on the upper level balcony—yes, this is exciting news.
As the Union continues to adapt to new students, new construction, and new technologies, we are always striving to make this a better place for you. It is amazing how many students study in the Union and, as you would imagine, being the president of the Union, I clearly support this. It seems as though the upper level, with its plush purple couches, has become the “hot spot” for studying. Noticing this, we decided to try to create more workspaces there by installing 16 new Ethernet ports and by supporting electrical outlets. At the same time, Brian Kolins, the Executive Board’s member at large, tested each of the Ethernet ports in the Union to check their status. We did find some that were not functioning and put in a work order to get them back in working order.
As I walk through the Union every night, it is clear that this addition is benefiting students every day, and that is our goal. If you are ever unsatisfied with something in the Union, or aware of something that needs attention, upkeep, or repair, please send the E-board an e-mail at eboard@union.rpi.edu. It is our goal to make the student Union a living room for every student on campus.
Similarly, I would like to ask you to help keep the Union clean. I have noticed an increasing amount of trash piling up here and there. Yes, we have an environmental services staff in the Union. It is their job to make sure that the floors are cleaned after daily use, stairs are clear of ice and snow, restrooms are cleaned, etc. It is not their job to throw away our trash, pick pretzels off of the carpet, or throw away hamburger wrappers and soda cans. This is our job as patrons of the Union. Now I understand that we are all very busy, and we sometimes forget to throw away a napkin, but please help clean up after yourself. The food services in the lower level are not full-service, which helps keep our activity fee reasonable. It is important to remember that we as students support this building and its operations. That is why it should be important to all of us that we work together to keep the building clean.
