On the road this past weekend the Rensselaer’s women’s basketball team competed in two conference away games, trampling over the Clarkson squad but falling short once again to nationally ranked St. Lawrence.

Saturday’s game at St. Lawrence started out showing promise of a close game with the home team holding only a five-point lead by the end of the first half. However, St. Lawrence came on strong in the second half scoring 41 points to Rensselaer’s 29. Even with the Red Hawks’ strongest players in the game, it wasn’t enough to outscore the opponents, leaving the final score a 63-46 loss.

Bouncing back from the upset the previous evening, the Red Hawks’ showed no hint of mercy in overpowering Clarkson and defeating them by 20 points. The highlight of the game was the team effort made by each player in the squad, starting from the seniors and reaching down to the freshmen. Together the team hit 75 percent of their attempted free throws and 41 total rebounds. Kristin Kaczynski, Jacqueline Ferrari, and Holly Neiweem each scored 12 points for Rensselaer while Caitlin Vestal added 10 points and Karen Wood picked up another eight points. The end result of the total team effort was a 76-56 win.

Coming out of this weekend’s games, the Rensselaer women are 12-6 overall and 6-3 in the conference. Looking ahead to this week, the Red Hawks travel to Cazenovia on Tuesday night at 7 pm and host William Smith on Friday night at 6 pm and Hamilton on Saturday afternoon at 2 pm in the Armory.

On an academic note, the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA) has recently announced the 2001-2002 Winter Women’s Basketball All-Academic team. Among other student-athletes from various schools, RPI’s Alyssa Comis, Kristin Kaczynski, and Holly Neiweem were honored as members of the All-Academic team based on a minimum 3.20 grade-point average and their significant contributions to the Red Hawk basketball team.
