Independent Council President outlines safety, surveys, events

Jacob D. Hunt
Independent Council President

First and foremost, I would like to wish every RPI student a prosperous new semester. With luck, the recent break has given us all the necessary rest that will enable us to do our best this semester.

The Independent Council is especially ready to accomplish some difficult tasks, but first I would like to recap last semester’s end.

Just before the end of last semester, the IC sponsored a Sheer Idiocy comedy event. The turnout was amazing! Approximately 60 people attended to watch a spectacular show and dine on some of the finest appetizers available, which the IC provided. I would like to thank Sheer Idiocy again for their interest in this joint venture, and would like to encourage everyone on campus to attend their events as often as possible—they provide some of the best comedy available.

This semester the IC plans to continue work on key issues: IC survey tabulation, campus stair–case safety, as well as another sponsored event. At present, all surveys passed out by the IC have been returned and computerized— tabulation will begin shortly. Once complete, survey results will be made available immediately. It is our hope that these surveys will provide students with useful information, which will enable them to make an informed decision between several possible elective courses they may choose to take.

The IC also plans to review the campus concrete staircases. It has been brought to our attention that some folks climbing these stairs have fallen down before a witness, which then reported to the IC. With this in mind, the IC will be sending out members searching for staircases with the reinforcement bars exposed and deteriorating concrete forms. If you have any information in regards to the deteriorating concrete staircases, e-mail us at ic@union.rpi.edu. It is in our sincerest hopes that this infor–mation, when collected, will be consolidated and sent to RPI’s repair and maintenance staff and the administration to facilitate repairs.
