Top Hat Campaign “only the beginning”
Posted 11-28-2001 at 2:31PM
Gil Valadez Grand Marshal I hope everyone enjoyed the Thanks-giving vacation. Visiting family made mine especially memorable. Now, as the last of the turkey and trimmings digest and settle somewhere in your body (wherever you least desire it), it is time to bear down and zone in on finishing strong. It is the part of the semester we affectionately call “crunch time,” and I wish everyone a healthy and successful run of it. Remember your health is most important, so sleep, eat, drink lots of water, and avoid the drugs like no-doze that are just setting you up to crash and often crash hard. Good old coffee and determination go a long way.
The 20 days and 20 nights of student feedback campaign may have appeared to end last week, culminating with a successful Student Life Forum with Vice-President of Student Life Dr. Eddie Knowles. Yet this campaign was really only the beginning. The real objective is to reshape the student government model at RPI to make it revolve around students. In other words the goal is year-round, interactive student feedback. It is absolutely critical that student government be constantly drawing feedback and input from its constituents, you the students. For that reason I must confess that the 20 days and 20 nights campaign was simply a demonstration of what to expect from Student Government for the remainder of my term and hopefully from here on out. If your club, organization, fraternity, or sorority did not meet with a senator or myself, please drop me a note at gm@rpi.edu and we can set it up for next semester.
One issue that was raised at the Student Life Forum is the idea of improving communication between administration and students and vice versa. As I indicated at the forum, this will be a primary focus of the next half of my term as Grand Marshal. I would like to leave office having helped to develop a better system of direct and continuous student feedback and administrative communication. So often I see gaps in the communication that lead to avoidable misunderstandings. If this issue interests you please e-mail me gm@rpi.edu with your input. The goal next semester will also be to lay a framework upon which future senates can build even more successes and advance the student voice even further.
As the semester winds down, the Senate will still be meeting to tie up any loose ends, in order to come back next semester with a clear agenda of what we would like to accomplish before the glitter of GM week settles and our terms are history. Good night! | |
