The National Order of Omega was founded in 1959 at the University of Miami to honor greek leaders for their high scholastic achievements, community and campus involvement, and superior greek leadership. Currently, there are close to 400 chapters of the Order nationally. The chapter at Rensselaer was founded in 1984 and has flirted with closure several times since then.
Steps have recently been taken, however, by the Dean of Students Office, IFC, Panhel, faculty, and alumni to preserve this noble tradition and put the organization in its proper place, as a symbolic beacon of all that is good in our greek community.
Over the past two years, the Omega Mu chapter of the Order of Omega has continued to grow in strength and size and recently tapped members of our greek community to be inducted this coming weekend.
These greek leaders should be commended for their achievements, and serve as encouragement to all greeks to do their best in pursuit of fraternal ideals. For the first time in recent memory, the honor society presented public invitations to the induction ceremonies. Not only does this provide public recognition of outstanding greeks, but also increases visibility of the Order of Omega.
Another first for this year, the society is performing two inductions: one in the fall (this weekend), and one to be announced in the spring. If you are a junior or senior with an acceptable GPA, qualities, and leadership potential, I encourage you to apply in the fall.
Additionally, the Order will be sponsoring events and other campuswide awards later this year, so keep an eye out. For more information about RPI’s greek honor society, you can visit their website at http://www.rpi.edu/dept/doso/greek/omega/.
It is important that as greeks, we all strive to do our best. Those among us who are true brothers and sisters all deserve our esteem and gratitude for their contributions and selfless devotion, and the honor of wearing the silver omega on the lapel symbolizes just that. Congratulations to the greek leaders being honored, and to the honorary initiates who devote time from their lives to improve the greek community here at Rensselaer.
