Participate in Rensselaer Family Weekend

Last week, I mentioned the importance of Reunion & Homecoming. This weekend marks another great Rensselaer tradition: Family Weekend. Make sure to invite your parents up this coming weekend to get a first-hand look at everything that Rensselaer has to offer. This weekend gives you the opportunity to spend some time with your parents and share with them everything that makes Rensselaer unique. Show them your residence hall, the dining halls, where you study and do research, and even introduce them to your friends. There are many great events throughout the course of the weekend that allow your families to enjoy the campus and the diverse student body.

On Friday, make sure to start the weekend by checking in at the tent outside Academy Hall. After that, show your parents just how tough your major is by having them participate in an “in-class experience,” attending any of the various classes held across campus that day. From noon–1:30 pm, meet the faculty dean of the Residential Commons in the Rensselaer Union Games Room for a couple of games of billiards. From 4–5 pm, there will be an alumni panel speaking about the value of the Rensselaer education and how it has helped them develop a successful career. Next, head over to the men’s hockey game versus Colorado College at 7 pm. Friday night is also Troy Night Out, so don’t forget to head to Troy and show your family all the great restaurants and businesses right down the road from RPI.

On Saturday, the Rensselaer Aeronautical Federation will be hosting an RPI Fly-By, giving you and your family an opportunity to see the beautiful Rensselaer campus from above. From 9:30–10:15 am, join President Shirley Ann Jackson in the official Family Weekend Kick-Off, where she will present on the progress and accomplishments of Rensselaer as she welcomes you to campus. The International Festival will occur in the McNeil Room in the Union from 11 am–2 pm. Bring your family over to the Union to enjoy performances, art, and food from the many cultures here at Rensselaer. Fall Fest will be held near the registration tent outside Academy Hall from noon–3 pm and will feature showcases, activities, and student performances. At 3 pm, the Rensselaer Music Association is hosting a concert in the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center. Head over to see spectacular performances by the Rensselaer Percussion Ensemble, the Symphonic Band, the Concert Choir, and the Symphony Orchestra. Lastly, end your night with the Hat Trick-or-Treat Night sponsored by the RPI Hockey team for a night of music, food, and Halloween fun before its 7 pm game. Last, but not least, there’s the GM/PU Brunch, which will be held in the McNeil Room of the Union on Sunday morning.

As you can see, there are many different ways to show your family how unique the Rensselaer community is. Student groups, campus organizations, and even athletic teams all come together to create a weekend full of fun and excitement for you and the whole family. I guarantee your family is curious about life here at Rensselaer. Don’t be afraid to share with them all the things you love about this university.

I hope everyone has a great rest of the week and enjoys the Family Weekend festivities. If you have any questions about the Union or the Executive Board, feel free to e-mail me at pu@rpi.edu.
